Phil Chisholm '56 says he has a soft spot for Alma College. When he recalls his experience here, it's easy to see why.
"You're a person, not a number, at Alma," he says. "I enjoyed being in an atmosphere where you can really get to know people, including the professors."
During his senior year, Chisholm and a group of friends started a secret fundraising campaign to buy his favorite economics professor, who was disabled, an electronic golf cart to help him get around.
"He lived near campus, and even in the winter, he was very determined to walk back and forth," he says. "We often took turns escorting him across the street when it was icy. The whole campus gathered when we presented him with the golf cart, and he was just in tears. Something like this is unique to Alma's culture."
Reasons like this are why Chisholm gives annually. He also has the College in his will.
"I always say that when I hit the lottery, Alma's going to be in great shape!" he says, laughing. "One of the best things we can do is make sure young people are educated, and I wouldn't trade the education I received at Alma for anything."
